Presentation: With its black shiny box, the Vive Cosmos XR certainly seems like the premium headset its price suggests. But the moment you have the outer sleeve off and open the box that illusion of premium will soon fade. Everything is kind of shoved into plastic bags and while there is a small amount of cardboard to hold everything in place there is nothing here that would protect it from large knocks and bumps, so you will have to make sure the outer box has no damage before opening it.

Description: VIVE Cosmos XR is an upcoming stand-alone edition and faceplate for the modular Vive Cosmos that brings high-quality XR passthrough cameras to Vive Cosmos for the first time. Debuting as a developer kit in Q2, Vive Cosmos XR allows a near-complete passthrough field of view that utilizes the majority of the VR display (up to 100 degrees FOV) to integrate real-world and virtual content.
For example, Vive Sync, the company’s collaboration tool will integrate Vive Cosmos XR functionality so that virtual objects can be brought into real-world environments, bolstering collaboration options for VR-based meetings. Featuring high-quality passthrough cameras, Vive Cosmos XR combines a crisp view for overlays of the real world, blended seamlessly into the virtual one. Review: The Vive Cosmos XR is a headset that is not aimed at the general public, but rather the VR developers. The original Vive Cosmos has 6 cameras to work its inside-out tracking array all of which are located on the faceplate. The Vive Cosmos XR has the same amount, but they are all incredibly high-quality stereoscopic cameras allowing for much higher quality mixed reality abilities, effectively turning the original headset into an AR/VR headset as well. To be honest it really isn’t any good for the general public and most people will see little to zero improvements with regards to the user experience. You will be much better off buying the Vive Cosmos Elite.
