Review: Toybox is little more than it’s name. It’s basically a big virtual box of toys, a sort of test platform to get used to the Oculus touch controllers. There are some bricks to stack and throw, some rockets, tanks and even a laser gun, but once you have played with everything once, you have seen all there is to see and might find it a little boring. Then something magical happens, something that will make you fall in love with this app and play it time and time again. You discover the multiplayer social side of it.

At its heart, this…experience is all about the social element. The ability to invite others to join you in the playroom is something that makes VR a joy to own. You will discover that while on the outside us humans can be very different people, on the inside we are all children at heart (well, VR system owners are anyway). There is no games or set activities in this app, but together you will soon make some. Taking turns to stack blocks, shooting each other, or just firing rockets at each other, it isn’t until you have someone (a friend?!?) to play with that this app shows it’s true colours.

It doesn’t matter what sort of games/experiences you are into, you need to download this app. Not only is it the perfect demo for getting used to the Oculus Touch controllers, but it is also a place to restore your faith in VR as a social entertainment medium. Playing this app also helps you to understand why Facebook invested in Oculus in the first place, its a social experience that you can not only share with other people, but you also feel happy about inviting them to join you. This is just the beginning of VR, so imagine what the future holds!
