Presentation: The first thing you will notice when going to unbox the Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition is how lightweight it is. Remembering that it is a smartphone-powered VR headset means there are no inner workings as such. With a plastic tray holding everything in most people will be left wondering why they have paid so much for this headset. But the magic of it is hidden away on the inside of the headset, but more on that later. When it comes to the unboxing experience there really isn’t a lot to say, but given how lightweight it all is I can’t see much damage happening in transit.

Description: The first edition of Samsung’s Gear VR, the SM-R320, was released in December 2014. This version was only compatible with the Galaxy Note 4. This edition was mainly released for developers so they could get an understanding of how the device worked and so they could create content that would be ready for the official release of the consumer version of the device. It also gave the chance for VR/technology enthusiasts to gain early access to the technology.

Review: The Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition wasn’t designed for general use nor was it only for developers. In fact, it worked pretty well and I was happy to use it. This headset was not only the first of the Gear VR range of headsets, but it was also the heaviest mostly thanks to the large plastic padding on the front of the headset which was designed to take most of the weight. It didn’t even come with a remote that featured in other Gear VR headsets, it really was pretty basic and only worked with the touch pad on the side of the headset. But when you compare the user experience to other mobile VR headsets at the time it was pretty groundbreaking. If you have a compatible smartphone I would still go for the later Gear VR headsets rather than this one.
