Presentation: Much like the original 8K headset, the 5K XR’s box isn’t up to much at all, but it is at least looking like a finished product. With a plastic tray for the headset to sit in and a nice branded outer box, the unboxing experience isn’t exactly amazing given the premium price tag, but it is better than the original 8K headsets.

Description: 5K XR is a virtual reality headset that is compatible with most VR software titles for Windows-based PC’s. The headset has a resolution of 2560×1440 per eye or a total resolution of 5120×1440. The differentiating factor between the Pimax XR headset and the Pimax 5K PLUS is the XR utilizes OLED screens rather than LCD screens. The term “XR” stands for eXtended Range for the added dynamic colour range and the near absolute blacks that are possible for OLED type screens.

Review: If you put the Pimax 5K XR next to the Pimax 5K PLUS you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. In fact, even turning it on and playing with it doesn’t tell them apart that much. It is the same headset with an OLED screen instead of a LCD one and that is it. Same software issues, same set-up issues same everything! Sure, the colours do look better on this headset and the blacks are more vibrant, but I am left wondering why Pimax launched a headset like this when so many other issues were yet to be solved!? But hey, if you want to pay over the odds for a headset that is best used by enthusiasts only this might be the one for you.
