Review: What do you get if you cross a retro style RPG with a motion controller shooter? Deadeye Dungeon is what you get and there is a lot of like about this gaming genre combo. With a clipboard for the gold count and the map in one hand and a “powerful Arcane Gun” in the other, you are a gun slinging dungeon adventurer who is willing to enter the darkest of dungeons in order to find treasure.
Using one Oculus Touch controller (because the other one simply holds the map) you have to work your way through the levels of the maze in order to find more and more treasure. You get to pick from 1,2,3 or 4 doors and what is behind them is any ones guess. Sometimes you can breathe a sigh of relief as it will be nothing, sometimes it’s a little bit of treasure (that you can save up to buy better guns) and sometimes it’s a horrifying creature that will often make you jump.
With its retro classic RPG style map, I like the way you never really know what is behind each door. Sadly it is the shooting mechanic of the game that really lets it down. It’s slow to reload and doesn’t feel right to aim meaning when you go to fight enemies you often end up losing for no other reason other than poor gameplay actions. But even with those problems I still enjoyed playing it and would love to see it grow and improve. Even now it’s worth the asking price, but I can only hope it does get better with a few updates.
