Review: The hype behind ‘Ruinsmagus’ has been massive and is said to be the first JRPG especially designed and built for VR (it isn’t by the way). Don’t get me wrong, from the clean white menu the game gifts you with its beautiful visuals and music and it starts to feel and look like a grand adventure awaits you. Sadly that illusion doesn’t last long at all. From the spare locations to the terrible grammar in the text blocks, it all starts to feel cheap and unpolished even if it doesn’t look all that different to the Steam VR Version.
For me the game was just too low, too sparse. When exploring the Ruins there are times when it could just as easily have run on an Oculus Go, let alone a high-end VR-PC. The village you explore looks amazing and all the time and effort seems to have gone into that, rather than the gameplay itself. In fact, if you play the demo you will pretty much see what the whole game is about, there really isn’t much more to it other than more enemies and story. And that is what I highly suggest! Give the demo a go, if you like the look of it maybe try the full game, but personally, I wasn’t blown away with the demo, let alone the full game.
