Apollo 11 VR is a new type of interactive VR documentary, not only do you get to relive the events of 1969, you can also take control and fly the command module, land the lunar lander, explore the Moon’s surface and deploy the lunar experiments all before returning to earth in a fiery re-entry.
What I loved most about this experience is that you are not just a viewer the whole time, you do get to interact with some things and this does add to the immersion levels. But it is the graphics what will really make you feel as if they are there and at times it can all seem a little too realistic and you might find yourself as I did gripping the chair a little too tight.
All credit goes to this version of Apollo 11 VR for looking the same as the Rift version, but I am not convinced the PSVR is the right place for this sort of educational app. At the end of the day, people didn’t get their PS4’s for educational purposes, they got it for gaming. Yes it’s interesting, yes it’s once again over priced on the Playstation Network and yes some people will find it amazing. But most of us PSVR gamers will not enjoy it and for that reason, I can’t really recommend it unless you have a strong passion for all things space history related.
