This is the Thunderdome! Made exclusively to take full advantage of Virtual Reality, Super Kaiju is a fast-paced, highly accessible arena shooter. In the best tradition of the arcade games of old, the core game mechanics are easy to grasp, yet difficult to master. Enjoy Super Kaiju and test your skills in single-player mode, or test yourself against other players in the exciting and competitive PVP trials for the title of supreme Kaiju.

Review: Super Kaiju is an odd game for sure, but I will try and explain what to expect. You and your opponent stand on platforms, this idea is to run down your opponent’s energy and win the game, much like a beat’em up. Now, you could stand there and shoot at each other, but this method is very slow in knocking your opponent’s health down. So the other way is to shoot at the various enemies spawning all around you. There are flying creatures, planes, balloon riders, all sorts of crazy things to shoot at. Shooting at these things will give you stars the more stars you have the more superweapons you can buy. From shields to missiles, all designed to knock your opponent’s health down.

Sadly there is no tutorial at the moment, so you are kind of left to discover what to do yourself. With each passing level upgrade and match win you also get more powerups and skins for your robot. While not the easiest game to master the simple point and shoot gameplay (once you understand what to shoot at) is fun and easy to get to grips with. Sadly the lack of online players that are the same level as yourself is the biggest issue. In my first match, I was paired with a level 9 player and of course they destroyed me withing moments, but at least there are still a small group of active players online waiting for a match (even if they will win almost every time). Graphics-wise it looks pretty great with a good range of environments to play in, as is the 3D sound. I wish there was more of a single-player mode other than the practice option, but gameplay-wise there is enough depth and strategy to keep coming back for more.
