Review: Choosing a strategy game too play with friends has always boiled down to just a handful of games that everyone seems to enjoy. Of that handful of games, Chess is one of them and another is Dungeons & Dragons. But what if the two could be played at once? That is what Dungeon Chess hopes to answer. It’s the classic game of chess that most people know and love but played with Dungeons & Dragons creatures. The idea is this combination makes games of chess seem alive and a lot more exciting.
While you only get one set of pieces and animations to choose from you can change your playing environment quite a lot. From picking the room you play in, to changing the artwork that is on the walls. There is also some good variety of avatars t choose from, but what on earth is wrong with using your own Oculus one I will never know. At the moment you can only invite people to play the game, but soon online matchmaking will be coming. So your choices at the moment are playing with the AI (with a changeable difficulty setting) to playing with friends.
If you are old enough to remember playing Battle Chess by Interplay Entertainment you will find this game very much the same style. Obviously, things look a lot better than they ever did on a Windows 95 PC, with some pretty cool animation as a nice playing environment. While Dungeon Chess is a little limited even compared to the retro Battle Chess game, it still works well and with its multiplayer options, it will keep chess fans in VR for weeks on end. (Provided they have enough friends to play with.) But even without the online matchmaking games, this is still one of the better VR chess games out there.
